Note: Exam4 does not support new upgrade versions of Windows and Mac OS upon release.
Turn off Auto-updates, and do NOT update your operating system until such time as your exam administrator announces Exam4 supports that OS.

Minimum specification requirements:

• 2 GB Ram
• 500 MB Storage
• Screen Resolution of 800x600 or higher
• 64-bit Operating System

You MUST be logged into a user-account that has full administrative rights to your device in order to run Exam4. Users of institutionally owned/controlled devices should contact their IT Department for assistance.

The following operating systems and hardware configurations are NOT supported:

• Beta OS versions
• Apple macOS 12 and earlier
• Apple iDevices (iPad, iPhone, etc.)
• Windows 8.1 and earlier
• Windows (RT, IoT, Mobile, Team & S versions)
• Windows 10 or 11 SL (non-English Editions)
• Surface devices that do not have Windows 10/11 Home, Pro, Education or Enterprise version
• Systems with ARM v8.0 or less processors
• Windows computers with ARM v8.1 processors (i.e., Snapdragon) not on Windows 11 24H2 or higher
• Linux
• Chromebooks
• Virtual operating systems (VMs)
• Anything else not specifically listed as supported above

"When I try to submit on my Windows computer my progress gets stuck at 50%."

Or you may get this error message: "Security Alert: Unable to read/write exam file on disk. Do NOT proceed."

You may have a Microsoft Beta feature enabled that is interfering. This will resolve your issue:

1. Close all applications.

2. In your Windows search bar (magnifying glass on the taskbar), start typing "Control Panel" and choose the Control Panel app to open it.

2. Under "Clock and Region" click "Change Date, time or number formats."

3. Select "Administrative Tab".

4. Click the "Change system locale..." button.

5. In the "Region" window that comes up, UN-check "Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support" and click OK.

6. Click "Restart Now" when prompted.

7. Take and submit a NEW practice exam.

Virtual external displays (monitors, iPad, iPhone, other Macs, etc.) are not permitted when using Exam4. This includes the use of screen capture tools and OS features such as Sidecar or DisplayLink.

• If you are using some kind of screen capture tool, stop using it and restart Exam4.
• If you are seeing the image below or something like it, this may indicate that a virtual display is active on your computer.
• Disable any virtual display tools in your computer's display preferences and try again.

Cause: If you set the zoom factor too high it will wrap the answer separator and you will not get word counts for each exam question.

Solution: From the Format menu, lower the zoom until the separator doesn't wrap and you see the word counts for each answer.

If this does not resolve your issue, this article explains how to optimize the exam environment.

Exam files are encrypted and can only be opened by exam administrators at your institution.

Practice exams are for ensuring that your computer can run Exam4, and familiarizing yourself with the software—not for practicing answers.

You won’t be able to review the contents of a practice exam, nor are we at liberty to provide it to you.

If the default/reccommended display settings on your Windows computer are not optimal for Exam4, there are display adjustments you can make that can optimize how much of the usable typing window is available in Exam4.

NOTE: You will have to restart Exam4 after changing these settings to affect what you see in the software.

1. In your Display settings, make sure your Scaling is set to 100%.

2. If you have a high resolution display, reducing your resolution may also help. Start with a resolution of about 1440x900 (keep the scaling at 100%). Adjust up or down to find what works best on your machine.

2. On start-up Screen3 in Exam4, choose the appropriate font-size to adjust the width of the typing window. A larger font-size will yield a larger typing window. Try a few exams to see what works best. We suggest choosing the Large or XL setting and adjusting from there.

To adjust the Resolution and Scaling setting:

• Type "Display Settings" into the search window at the lower left of your screen and click where it says "Display Settings" on the right side of the pop-up window:
• Find "Scale and layout", and change the scaling factor - try 100%.

• If the box is grayed out, you may have to click on "turn off custom scaling" first to make this adjustment.

In Exam4, choose the Large or XL font-size on start-up Screen3 to make the typing window use more space. Font sizes are available based on your current display settings, and some may not be available.

1. Make sure that your Wi-Fi is on and connected to the Internet.
2. If you are using a VPN (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, etc) try turning it off before starting your exam.

You'll need to change your computer's language settings to use Exam4.

Also Note: If you are running Windows 10 Single Language Edition with a Non-English language, you will be unable to run Exam4. Click here to find out what version you are running. To run Exam4, upgrade to a supported version of Windows OS. Check Exam4 Supported Operating Systems for more information.

Set the Language for non-Unicode programs under Region Settings to "English (United States)".

Please complete ALL steps to fix this issue:

1. From the search box at bottom left corner of your Windows screen: Start typing the word "Region".

2. Select “Region settings”.

3. Scroll down to “Related settings” and click "Additional date, time & regional settings". (Windows 11 users may need to find "Administrative Language Settings" to get to the "Region" window, and then skip to #5 below.)

4. On this "Clock and Region" window - click "Change date, time, or number formats" under "Region".

5. On this "Region" window"- click on the "Administrative" Tab.

6. Click on the "Change system locale" button.

7. Make sure the “Current system locale” box is set to English (United States) - and that the "Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8..." checkbox is DISabled (not checked).

8. Click OK on each window and close all windows.

9. Make sure the computer's calendar is set to "Gregorian"

Reboot your computer, and run a practice exam.

An 8xxTS error message [where 8xx means any 3-digit number beginning with 8] is a touch screen issue and usually means the user does not have full admin rights on the computer.

The first thing to try is to reboot your laptop, and launch Exam4 again. If the message persists, continue to the next step.

If you do have full admin rights on the computer, then the touch screen failed to disengage. You may need to disable it manually:

To manually disable the Touch Screen on a Windows computer:

• In the search bar, type “Device”
• Select “Device Manager Control Panel” from the pop-up window.
• In the Device Manager window, look for “Human Interface Devices” and click the ">" to show the sublist.
• Right click on each iteration of “HID-compliant touch screen” (there may be more than one) and select “Disable device”

To reverse this later, just follow these steps and choose “Enable device” for each iteration listed.

Your exam files and submittal receipts are kept in a separate location from the Exam4 software.

To view a list of your exams or a submittal receipt, or to re-submit an exam:

• Open Exam4
• Choose "Select existing exam"
• Select the desired exam
• Click on [View Exam Submittal Receipt]

NOTE: You can submit your exam from this screen by selecting your exam and clicking the "Submit Electronically" button.

To go DIRECTLY to the exam files folder on your computer:

• Open Exam4.
• Choose "Select existing exam".
• Click on [Open Exam Files in Finder] on your Mac, or [Open Exam Files in Explorer] on your Windows machine.

The folder will open in a Finder or Explorer window.

NOTE: You are responsible for keeping these files until you receive the results of your exam. Extegriity recommends backing up this folder to external storage.

There is the option to pay with a credit or debit card after you click on the "Pay ($amount) via card" link. This is located on the same screen as the download link, which appears just after you fill in your registration form.

1. Find your Bar Exam jurisdiction here.
2. Look for a heading that says "Already Registered?" and click the "Skip to Download" button beneath it.
3. Fill out the small form.
4. Click the large, blue "Pay $(amount)" button.
5. Follow the instructions to pay with the card of your choice.

Payment Confirmation:

You will receive an on-screen payment confirmation if your payment is successful, but you will not receive a payment confirmation email.

Of course, you can always check your credit/debit card statement for the completed transaction if you have concerns.

If you want to take a screenshot of this on-screen confirmation, you are encouraged to make payment on a computer. On the phone, the on-screen payment confirmation may not persist long enough for you to capture it.

How to register, pay, download and install Exam4 for a Bar Exam

When you download, you must take careful note of where you are saving that file (called an "installer").

Go to that location, find the most current Exam4 installer, then double-click to install Exam4 to its proper locations and run the software.

It may help to create a special folder for the current Exam4 download and keep it in a convenient location so you can be sure to find it.

On Apple computers you have to give each application permission to use hardware such as the camera, and allow software components to be installed.

It is VERY important that you approve all prompts for permission when installing Exam4, and then run and submit a practice exam or your exam may not be completed properly.

MacOS may ask for these permissions when installing and running Exam4 - enter the password used to log into your Mac:

Exam4 will have to be quit and restarted for the camera and screen recording permissions to take effect:

If you're using a Windows computer and having ALL of these issues while trying to view the question document from inside Exam4 :

• The right-side or bottom of the document is cut-off
• The complete text cannot be seen
• Using the magnifier slide or reset button at the bottom of the screen or either of the scroll bars does not allow you to see all the text

... then you likely will have to change the "scaling" in the "Display Settings" on your PC:

• Type "Display Settings" into the search window at the lower left of your screen and click where it says "Display Settings" on the right side of the pop--up window:
• Find "Scale and layout", and change the scaling factor - try 100%.

• If the box is grayed out, you may have to click on "turn off custom scaling" first to make this adjustment.

Exam4 has detected more than one display device. This usually means you have an external monitor connected.

This may be a wired or wireless connection (ex., Miracast, usb wireless adaptors).

You will need to disconnect your external/extra device(s) and then relaunch Exam4.

Be sure that your Airport/WiFi is turned on and under Network Preferences, be sure your location is set to Automatic.

This violation can also happen if your internal built-in WiFi is not functional. An external WiFi adapter is not a supported substitute. Only a working internal WiFi adapter will clear this violation.

All exams that have been taken and saved on your laptop using Exam4 will be listed in the "Select existing exam" window.

Some schools require that you be on the school's network in order to submit electronically, so you may need to be on campus for Exam4's network connection to work.

It is also possible your security software (such as Norton Internet Security) is blocking the transmission. Try disabling this for a brief time and attempt to submit the exam while it is turned off.

In some rare cases with macOS this can be caused by Safari's caching mechanism. If you are on a Mac, try clearing the browsing history in Safari:

• Launch Safari
• From the Safari Menu choose "Clear History..."
• Select "all history" from the "Clear" drop down box, then click "Clear History"
